Director, Complex Problems Group
Ph.D., Theoretical Physics, State

Dr. Johnson joined the Department of Physics faculty at
the University of South Carolina (USC) in 1968, and has
since taught almost every Physics course at the graduate
and undergraduate level, along with interdisciplinary courses
in counterterrorism, musical acoustics, mathematics, and
computer programming.
His interests have reached across the sciences to incorporate
theory as well as practice. His research has explored new
mathematical objects, numerical uncertainty, computational
algorithms, and advanced mathematical techniques. His development
efforts have included numerous practical applications, such
as methods to protect computer networks from cyberterrorist
attacks, data warehousing, data mining, and relational database
management systems with Web and voice interfaces. These
interests have led him to establish two research and development
teams at USC as well as a private company.
The two research groups, Advanced Solutions Group, formed
in 1991, and Complex Problems Group, formed in 2000, have
brought more than $11 million to USC through state and federal
grants, mainly from the U.S. Departments of Justice and
Defense.
E811, incorporated in 1997, has performed numerous supercomputing
services, developed an advanced application for emergency
information management, and markets this system as well
as other original technologies for large-scale information
management.
