In 1996, the E811 team developed IRIS, the first
true web-browser application for emergency management. Since
then, E811 has been committed to developing and refining
software and communications systems that allow contingency
managers to control chaos and minimize the response and
recovery periods following a disaster.
Since then, the base IRIS system has been expanded to include
almost a dozen modules that provide special functionality
for emergency response teams at the state and local level,
as well as integration with key business sectors (like power
utilities) that form an important component of emergency
response. Unlike most GIS-based client-server emergency
management systems, IRIS is easy to learn and use. Over
five years of real field experience has shown that most
users require less than thirty minutes of training to become
agile IRIS users.
E811 continues to develop special-purpose modules that extend
functionality, allowing emergency managers to form instant
and functional response networks that extend over broad
geographic areas. E811 provides software products that manage
most key operations areas associated with emergency response
and recovery.
The goal of E811 emergency management systems is to provide
a seamless information and resource management network that
is directly targeted towards mitigating the impact of disasters
and speeding the recovery process.
