The BioStrat Portal
The Challenge
Scientific and engineering expertise is the lifeblood of an
oil and gas exploration company. An exploration company will
prosper only if it can effectively leverage complex scientific
data from many different sources to reduce drilling risk.
Yet, integrating varied scientific data so that it produces
timely and useful information that matches the needs of geologists
and other experts is a significant challenge. Despite the
growing technology benefits of the information age, most geoscientists
spend more time manipulating data to produce charts, maps
and tables than they do in exploiting the data to produce
information the company can use.
The E811 Solution
BioStrat
Portal is a web-based data integration system for paleontological
and biostratigraphic data developed by E811, Inc. that solves
or significantly reduces the problems of data integration
and format manipulation for key exploration data.
-
Secured
web interface
Allows access to data and files from any workstation
at any time. E811's public key infrastructure (PKI)
option allows secure, encrypted access using almost
any web browser on either Windows or Unix platforms.
Graphical navigation makes data searching and analysis
more rapid and productive. Rapidly search for paleo
data by geographic area, age, similar tops, quality
of data, or well metadata characteristics, such as total
depth or presence of sand count data.
-
Integrates
data from different sources
Seamlessly integrates data from multiple paleo data
providers into a single, normalized system. BioStrat
Portal automatically correlates paleo data from government
and commercial suppliers into a unified framework that
is customized to match the requirements of your geoscientists.
Flexible loaders and a unique data translator system
make it possible to quickly integrate unique or proprietary
data into the same framework.
-
Data format flexibility
Upload data in the file format you want, download in
a different format. In addition to standard paleo data
formats, BioStrat Portal accepts Bugware, Landmark,
and custom text files. An authorized scientist or data
technician using the web system simply selects a data
file to load, clicks the upload button, and the file
is transmitted, parsed, and loaded to the database where
it is immediately searchable.
-
Internet GIS services
BioStrat Portal is optionally integrated with ESRI Arc-IMS
4, the leading internet mapping solution. BioStrat Portal
offers an integrated GIS browser, or you can connect
directly to Arc-IMS spatial services from existing Arc-GIS
workstations or other compatible GIS products. Special
layers include contours for age structure, isopach,
net sand, percent sand, and paleobathymetry maps.
-
Personalized
for each user
Each user has a special data workbench containing data
on wells selected by the user. From their personal workbench,
scientists can quickly browse data and generate aggregate
data products, like well summary reports for an entire
region. An automatic notification system sends email
to users who have identified interest in a region whenever
new or updated paleo data becomes available.
-
Quality Information Products
BioStrat Portal is designed to take data in a relatively
raw form and produce information products that are ready
for use, including charts, maps, and spreadsheets. BioStrat
Portal produces contour maps, point maps, multi-series
age-depth plots, and Ragware-style multi-plots, in addition
to well summary reports and file exports for Landmark
and Excel.
