at both the University of Utah and University of South Carolina,
now serves as Vice President of Residuum Energy in Salt
Lake City Utah. Residuum performs data screening, mining,
and analysis by geo-statistical methods.
Paul Huray, Ph.D.
Carolina Distinguished Professor, College
of Engineering and Information Technology, University of
South Carolina
Dr. Paul Huray, who received his Bachelor's and Ph.D. degrees
from the University of Tennessee, is a Carolina Distinguished
Professor in the University of South Carolina's College
of Engineering and Information Technology. He has served
the University in a variety of capacities, including as
a former Senior Vice President, Vice Provost, Distinguished
Professor of Physics and Engineering, and Chairman of the
Department of Computer Sciences and Engineering. Dr. Huray's
research is focused on information technology, computational
physics, supercomputer networks, IP based video, and use
of technology in education.
Ted Lightle
Former Director of the Office of Information
Resources (OIR), South Carolina Budget and Control Board
A graduate of the Citadel and Duke University, Ted Lightle
served as the Director of the Office of Information Resources,
South Carolina Budget and Control Board from 1983 until
his retirement in July, 2000. Mr. Lightle has been active
in a variety of professional organizations, including the
National Association of State Telecommunications Directors,
the National Association of State Information Resource Executives,
and the National Governor's Association Telecommunications
Steering Committee, which was chaired by former South Carolina
governor Carroll Campbell. Governor Campbell awarded Mr.
Lightle the Order of the Palmetto in 1995.
Joel A Smith III
Dean, Moore School of Business, University
of South Carolina
Joel A. Smith III, formerly president of Bank of America's
East Region Banking Group, began his service as dean on
October 1, 2000. Smith, a South Carolina native, has a long
and prestigious career as a bank executive and long history
of public service, including service as president of the
USC-Business Partnership Foundation. Mr. Smith is a 1967
graduate of the University of the South with a degree in
political science and economics. He began his banking career
with Bankers Trust of South Carolina, a predecessor to Bank
of America. He played a key role in the merger of Bankers
Trust of South Carolina with NCNB in 1986, and with the
C&S/Sovran/NCNB merger creating NationsBank in 1991.
As president of the East Region Banking Group, he managed
a $92 billion bank covering seven states and the District
of Columbia. He is chairman of the Spoleto Festival USA
and has served as chairman of the Central Carolina Economic
Development Alliance. Smith serves on the boards of several
business and educational institutions, including the South
Carolina Business Center for Excellence in Education, the
University of the South, the Benedict College Presidential
Advisory Committee, and the Governor's School for Science
and Mathematics Foundation. At USC, he serves on the President's
National Advisory Council. He is a post adjunct professor
at the business school.
Mr. Smith has won numerous awards and honors, including
International Ambassador of the Year from the Central Carolina
Economic Development Alliance and South Carolina Businessman
of the Year from the S.C. Chamber of Commerce. The United
Way of the Midlands recently honored Smith as a recipient
of its Humanitarian of the Year Award.
Samuel Tenenbaum
Advisor to the Dean of the College
of Liberal Arts, University of South Carolina; Former Vice
President of Chatham Steel Corporation
A graduate of Emory University, Samuel Tenenbaum has been
a leading businessman in Columbia, South Carolina. A retired
Vice President of Chatham Steel, which was founded by his
grandfather in 1915, Mr. Tenenbaum is active in a wide variety
of civic organizations, including the Palmetto Tree Project
in Columbia, South Carolina, Habitat for Humanity, the Central
Carolina Community Foundation, the Columbia Museum of Art,
and the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce, among others.
He has been instrumental in securing lottery funds for endowed
chairs at the University of South Carolina, and he currently
is serving as an advisor to the Dean of the College of Liberal
Arts at the University.
Mary Beth West
Vice President of Public Relations, Union
Planter Bank, Knoxville TN
Mary Beth West, APR, has more than 10 years'
experience in marketing communications in the finance and
private corrections industries, as well as with advertising/public
relations agencies serving numerous for-profit and non-profit
sectors. Accredited in public relations by the 20,000-member
Public Relations Society of America, she serves on PRSA's
national board. West is also a member of the University
of Tennessee's Board of Visitors for its College of Communications
based in Knoxville, Tenn.
